France seeks electronic music UNESCO status
Its 2023 and Germany grants the sound of Berlin Techno entry to the list of intangible heritage, the first step towards UNESCO heritage status.
Not to be outdone France has made a similar move for its electronic music prowess a.k.a French Touch to be included in their own intangible list.
The list of intangible cultural heritage allows signatory states of the UNESCO Convention to register “practices, representations, expressions, knowledge and skills that communities recognise as part of their cultural heritage” – think things like music, mastery of arts & crafts, traditional games and sports.
“Electronic music has a rightful place in our national intangible heritage,” said French Culture Minister Rachida Dati on Wednesday, confirming this first step. Recently, the ministry created a label for clubs as “places of artistic expression and celebration”.
Artists such as Daft Punk, St Germain, Cassius, Bob Sinclair, Mr Oizo....the list is extensive to see the music and its artists cultural impact worldwide.
It can take 1-3 years to secure UNESCO status which Berlin Techno received in 2025. More to come!
